Moisture, UV exposure, trapped water, rushed prep, and the wrong products can shorten the life of an exterior paint job dramatically in the Pacific Northwest. Our approach is thorough prep work, proper primers, and high quality exterior coatings designed specifically for Oregon weather.

Why Does Exterior Paint Fail So Fast in Oregon?

The right stain depends on the condition of the wood, sun exposure, previous coatings, and long term maintenance expectations. We usually recommend stain + sealer systems with slight solids (still allowing visibility of the grain) that act more like sunscreen for the wood instead of leaving it completely exposed.

Flashing, uneven texture, poor drywall repair, lighting changes, and rushed dry times are some of the most common causes of patchy interior walls. Lower sheen finishes like flat or matte tend to hide imperfections better, while proper prep and priming help create a more even appearance.

Why Does My Interior Paint Look Patchy?

This depends on UV exposure, foot traffic, drainage, and whether large dogs treat the deck like a racetrack. In the Pacific Northwest, most decks need maintenance around every 1–3 years. Staying ahead of full coating failure with light maintenance cleanings and recoats usually helps extend the life of the wood.

How Often Should Decks be Restained in Portland?

A properly prepared and coated exterior in the Pacific Northwest will usually last around 7 years before repainting starts to become a good idea. Sun exposure, moisture, and product quality all play a big role. Periodic inspections and smaller maintenance touch ups often help avoid large scale failures later on.

How Long Should Exterior Paint Last in Portland?

Sunlight, moisture, and weather exposure slowly break down the surface fibers of natural wood, causing the gray weathered appearance many decks and fences develop over time. Regular cleaning, maintenance coatings, and UV protective stain systems help preserve the natural tones much longer.

Why Does Exterior Wood Turn Gray Over Time?

Most peeling paint starts with moisture, poor prep, or skipping primer entirely, especially over bare wood (please use oil!). We see a lot of projects where surfaces were never sealed before painting. Proper primers, moisture management, and detailed surface prep make a huge difference in durability.

What Causes Peeling Exterior Paint?

Bathrooms deal with constant moisture, humidity, and temperature swings, so product choice matters a lot. Higher quality paints with proper mildew resistance and the correct sheen levels help walls hold up and clean more easily over time. Durable moisture resistant coatings in an eggshell or satin sheen generally perform best.

What Paint is Best for Bathrooms?

We use several paint systems that perform well in Oregon weather, including Sherwin Williams, Benjamin Moore, and especially Miller Paints, which is locally owned and specifically formulated for Pacific Northwest conditions. But the best system depends on the surface, exposure, and condition of the home.
